During our trip to Ohio, Shock, Liz and I decided to stop at Kent State University, the scene of the 1970 demonstrations against the invasion of Cambodia. If you recall, four students were shot dead by the Ohio National Guard, and many others were wounded. The campus has a Memorial dedicated to this, and if you are ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping in to see this, as it is an important part of history.

There is a granite memorial behind Taylor Hall, and in the parking lot, where the shootings took place, there are areas sectioned off where the four students were shot to death. As I stood and looked down at the memorial plaques of these students, I was overcome with emotion; there, on top of Sandra's memorial, sits a flower and a small stuffed bear.....a sad reminder of what happened over 30 years ago. To think that these four young students were shot to death because they had a different opinion, is just a major tragedy, and we must all make sure that it doesn't happen again. Who knows, perhaps Allison Krause would have found the cure for cancer; Jeff Miller could have been the next great heart surgeon, Sandra Scheuer could have been that best teacher that your kids came home and told you about; or Bill Schroeder could have been just the best dad in the world.......well, we shall never know.

Many soldiers die in battle, and God Bless them all... but these were not soldiers....they were just college kids, looking forward to a better life, and because they rubbed a certain section of society the wrong way.....they were killed. May 4th, 1970......I was only 14 years old. How old were you? 1970...the year Grand Funk Railroad was starting to roll....and in the future, singing about actions just like this....PEOPLE, LET'S STOP THE WAR!!!
