Clio, Michigan

July 25, 2003

Liz and I flew out of Philly into Toledo and didn't arrive until mid afternoon. Liz's shoulder was swelling up because some candy ass flying / stinging insect bit her, so we just chilled at the hotel, and didn't go to Andy's party...sorry we missed it. Joe and Lu arrived a little later, so we chilled at the bar for a while, then headed to the venue to pick up my front row tickets that I scored on Ebay. Joe and I sat in the front row, right, and Liz and Lu sat in the center section, and up....thanks girls. It was good to see the Cyberfunkers again and old friends including Shock, Rick and Jackie, Duck, JR and Lynn, Denny and Beth and a host of others.

The opening act was a group called Black Stone Cherry, four young guys who will rock your testicles (if you have 'em), off. I really was diggin' this group, as were many others, so I purchased their CD. If you like hard rock, give it a listen. The funk came on next, and the crowd was pumped for some FUNK.. Grand Funk. They played their full usual set, but I could tell they were playing with an increased energy level (if that's possible!!). The sound was right-on, thanks to Tim F., and everyone in the house was rockin'. Bruce did an extended guitar solo in the middle of ISLO....it was amazing, and you had to be there to believe it. Before SKOW, Don talked to the audience for a while about Clio and how he grew up in the area with Mel. He also dedicated the song to the women in his life, including Sunny and his Mom.....this was a nice and touching part of the show, and I'm glad I experienced it. The crowd wanted more after the WAAB encore...more of the American Band. As a side note, Joe and I were sitting next to a category 8 Mojo moment, but she was with her husband or boyfriend or something. She heard us talking about the Mojo and asked us what it was....Joe explained....but boyfriend/husband loser didn't seem to like it. At the end of the show, the category 8 was following the loser out of the venue when she turned around, then gave us a big wink......a lost opportunity.

After the show, there was a meet and greet that was handled by the Amphitheater Security Service (ASS). The band came out and sat on the edge of the stage, then the ASS kept reminding everyone that they are in charge and it will be an orderly procession up to the band. So, we just sat back and watched the people be herded up to the band like cows, by ASS. Then, when the people were done meeting the band, ASS was kicking them out of the venue quite quickly...I guess the ASS had to get home to do some important stuff, you know, like changing the cat litter or scraping dog crap off their shoes. It was entertaining to watch them.....the ASS.
